Affirmations and the power of thought

To understand the connection between affirmations and the power of thought, it’s worth noting that affirmations are positive statements repeated regularly to achieve a specific result. "Every day, I become more confident in myself"—we repeat this over and over, convincing ourselves that this quality exists within us and grows stronger with time. "I easily find a way out of the most difficult situations"—we assert this and try to believe it reflects reality. No matter which affirmation we repeat, if done correctly, we create a mental image of our desire fulfilled. We imagine ourselves already more confident, smarter, slimmer, or wealthier. With growing enthusiasm, we continue repeating affirmations and painting vivid pictures of a brighter future in our minds. The result? The creative power of thought is set into motion.

Proponents of the New Thought movement believe our thoughts carry an energetic charge. They don’t simply vanish after arising in our minds—they radiate outward and influence our reality. The exact mechanism remains unknown, yet subjective experience (people’s personal accounts) confirms this effect exists. We think about a new job, visualize ourselves in a spacious office or touring a modern manufacturing plant, feed our minds these positive thoughts daily, and soon notice them materializing. Job offers arrive, we spot ads for upskilling courses with employment opportunities, or we witness events that inch us closer to our goal. It might sound unbelievable, but even the most fantastical thoughts take form—provided you focus on your goal in the present tense and wholeheartedly believe it’s possible.

At first glance, it seems simple: just think positively, visualize your desire a few times, and—poof!—it manifests like magic. Not quite. In reality, many of us lounge on the couch fantasizing about being successful, wealthy, or loved—yet nothing changes. Why? For something to happen, work is required—both inner and outer work.

We’ll discuss outer work in other articles (particularly those on goal achievement). Outer work involves planning and taking tangible steps. Every effect must have a cause—that’s the world we live in, and it’s crucial to remember. For something you genuinely want to manifest, effort is non-negotiable. Without action, changes will occur independently—and there’s no guarantee they’ll be positive for you.

By inner work, I mean consistently dwelling on your goal as if it’s already achieved or in progress. Daydreaming on the couch hardly qualifies—it’s often just escapism. Typically, the dreamer’s mind drifts so far from their desire that within minutes, their visualization barely resembles the original goal.

Inner work is the process of repeatedly redirecting your thoughts to your desire. But since sustaining focus on one thing is challenging, we need tools to remind us of the goal and reel our restless minds back in. Affirmations are one such tool—and they work remarkably well. By repeating them, we keep our attention fixed on the desired outcome, consciously or subconsciously building its image in our minds. The more we practice affirmations, the more we think positively about our goal, amplifying the energy of our thoughts. Identical thoughts about an already-achieved goal accumulate somewhere in the universe, triggering the manifestation process. And that’s it in a nutshell. Wishing you success!
