Attention Selectivity Test, Thorndike test

The Thorndike test is a widespread among psychologists test for determining the selectivity of attention, which is a table with 100 three-digit numbers placed in random order in a table 10 by 10 cells, and ten random three-digit numbers that the subject must find and highlight in the table as follows as quickly as possible. The test time is limited to five minutes.

During the passage of the Thorndike test, it is desirable that the subject concentrates as much as possible on the test, this will allow a more objective assessment of the possibilities of his attention. By the way, there are at least three ways to pass this test:

  1. Systematic execution. When a person scans the entire table sequentially for each given number.
  2. Optimal way. It consists in the fact that the subject keeps in mind several given numbers and in an organized way searches for them in different places of the table.
  3. Chaotic way. Passing the test in a chaotic, random way, without organizing or ordering it in any way.

Below you can see a table for calculating the result in points. The table also indicates that each error or missing number subtracts 2 points from the total score.
